Fairfield Shuts Out Men’s Soccer

Game Recap
The visiting Fairfield Stags scored twice in the game's first half, then added three more markers after intermission to earn a 5-0 win over Canisius in MAAC men's soccer action Saturday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The Stags, who have now won three straight, improved to 6-4-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in MAAC play with the loss.

The teams traded shots back and forth in the early going before Fairfield put the first goal on the board in the 25th minute after Diego Casielles played a ball through the box to teammate Santiago Gonzalez, who beat Canisius keeper Bryce Tramuta with a low shot from seven-yards out. In the 36th minute, Fairfield stretched its lead to 2-0 when freshman Cormac Pike redirected a rebound off a penalty kick by Matt McGlinchey inside the near post. The goal for Pike in the first half was the first of his collegiate career.

Just 1:32 into the second half, the Stags took advantage of a Canisius own goal to make the score 3-0 before adding a fourth goal in the 52nd minute on the second goal of the night by Pike. The Stags capped the game's scoring in the 59th minute whenr Jack Weiss settled his own rebound off a Tramuta save and promptly drilled the ball under the cross bar for his third marker of the season.

Fairfield ended the game with a 15-10 advantage in shots, including an 11-2 lead in shots on goal. The Stags also were credited with seven corner kicks in the win against Canisius' three for the contest.

Tramuta made six saves in the loss for the Blue and Gold, while Fairfield goalkeeper Gordon Botterill recorded two stops en route to the win. He was replaced in goal with 9:03 left to play by teammate Liam Dougherty.
