Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Marist Bests Women’s Basketball, 78-53

The Canisius women's basketball team had trouble finding answers against the Marist attack on Sunday, as the Red Foxes shot 47 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arc, besting the Golden Griffins, 78-53 at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the loss the Griffs dropped to 6-15 and 4-6 in MAAC play, while Marist improved to 12-10 and 8-2 in conference action.

The Red Foxes offense was dialed in from the onset, outscoring the Blue and Gold 27-19 in the opening quarter, and the trend continued taking a 46-29 lead into halftime.

Marist kept Canisius at arms length the remainder of the game as the Griffs were only able to get within 15 points of the lead before the Red Foxes distanced themselves once again.

The Blue and Gold offense was led by Maria Welch who posted 11 points, and the secondary scoring was spread around as four different players tallied eight points apiece. Sara Hinriksdottir, Tiana Pugh, Anndea Zeigler and Danielle Sanderlin all tallied eight points in the game.

Sophomore transfer Alana Gilmer led the way for the Red Foxes, scoring 27 points and seven rebounds in the winning effort. Rebekah Hand (15 points), and Grace Vander Weide (10 points) also tallied double-figures.

The Blue and Gold offense was unable to match the accuracy of the Red Foxes, shooting just 29 percent from the field (18-of-62) and 15 percent from beyond the arc (3-of-20).

The Griffs did manage to protect the basketball better than it had on Friday, giving it away just 10 times and forcing 11 Marist turnovers. The Red Foxes bested the Griffs on the glass, 44-35.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH ZEH
"We didn't play any defense," head coach Terry Zeh said. "Against a really good team, if you don't play defense, you'll be down big and you're not coming back. We can't couple playing hard and playing smart, for sure. We have got to get to playing hard consistently, which has been a struggle for us.

"I think we need to take a hard look at how we're playing. We're not competing right now. If you don't compete there is nothing else that matters."

GAME NOTES
• With the loss Marist now leads the all-time series 35-14.
• The Blue and Gold are now 1-6 this season when tallying less than five treys.
• With her eight point performance today, Zeigler averaged 10 points through the two games this weekend.
• Welch reached double-digit scoring for the ninth time this season.
