AIC Defeats Hockey in Series Opener Friday

Three different players tallied goals and Stefano Durante stopped all 26 shots he faced to spark American International to a 3-0 victory over Canisius In Atlantic Hockey Conference action Friday at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.

Dominik Florian, Johno May and Nicolas Luka accounted for the three goals for the Yellow Jackets (9-12-2, 8-8-2 AHC), who extended their winning streak to three games with the victory.

Sophomore Daniel Urbani turned aside 29 shots between the pipes for the Golden Griffins (10-9-2, 10-5-0 AHC), who saw their seven-game unbeaten streak against conference competition halted.

Florian staked AIC to a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first period as he capped an end-to-end rush with a wrist shot that beat Urbani to the blocker for his third of the campaign.

May doubled the Yellow Jackets margin to 2-0 at the 10:55 mark of the second period, placing a feed from freshman Brennan Kapcheck into the back of the net from the middle of the slot.

Luka closed out the scoring near the midway point of the third period, tapping home a rebound while the teams were skating four aside.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"It was a disappointing loss coming back home to HARBORCENTER. It felt as though we were beat by the better team tonight. They got great goaltending. Stefano (Durante) played great for them tonight. Our guys were not around him enough to cause him a lot of trouble. But, overall, I thought we got beat by a better team.

"Offense was hard to come by tonight. We did have some chances; we hit a couple of posts. But you can count those chances on one hand. Typically, really good teams generate more than a handful of scoring opportunities. We've got to come together, be more predictable, play more together and that will help us get our chances."

Game Notes
• Canisius moved to 36-16-7 all-time against AIC with Friday's setback.
• The Griffs suffered their first home loss to the Yellow Jackets in 11 games dating back to the 2006-07 season.
ª Canisius was 0-for-3 on the power play, marking the first time this season that the Griffs have been held without power play goal in back-to-back contests.
• Canisius was shutout at HARBORCENTER for just the second time in program history and the first since a 3-0 setback to RIT on Nov. 15, 2014.
