Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second-Half Surge Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Bonnies

OLEAN, N.Y. – Junior Alex Grattarola scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead Canisius to a 2-0 victory over Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in collegiate men's soccer action Friday at the Marra Athletics Field Complex.

Grattarola tallied the decisive goal in the 57th minute and recorded the primary assist on the insurance marker from freshman Filippo Tamburini in the 71st minute to power the Golden Griffins (3-1-0) to their third straight victory.

Senior keeper Marco Trivellato posted his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career as he recorded three saves. Luke Iacobellis stopped seven shots between the posts for the Bonnies (2-2-1).

After a scoreless first half, Grattarola got Canisius on the board at the 56:51 mark, heading home corner kick from fellow junior Bjarki Benediktsson for his first goal of the campaign.

Tamburini provided some breathing room for the Griffs with a little under 20 minutes remaining. Canisius once took advantage of a corner kick opportunity, as Benediktsson played the ball to Grattarola, who found Tamburini in the box, where he deposited the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"I was very pleased with the way we played tonight. Saint Bonaventure is a well-organized team and dangerous on set pieces, and I felt we defended very well against them.

"We had a couple quality chances that we missed in the first half, so it was great to see us score a couple goals on corners in the second half."
