Buscaglia’s Two Goals Leads Women’s Soccer Over Fairfield

Game Recap
Canisius junior Paige Buscaglia scored her first two collegiate goals and sophomore goalkeeper Alana Rossi set the school's single season record for shutouts, as the host Golden Griffins defeated Fairfield 2-0 in MAAC women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The win, which snapped Canisius' three-game losing skid, improved the team to 6-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league play, while the Stags slipped to 4-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference action.

After playing a scoreless first half, Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the game's 51st minute when Buscaglia beat Fairfield goalkeeper Megan DeFeo on a penalty kick. DeFeo was able to get both hands on Buscaglia's penalty kick attempt, but the ball ricocheted inside the right goal post to give Canisius the game's first marker. The Stags had a chance to tie the game in the 66th minute of play when Melanie Hingher ripped a shot toward the Canisius goal, but the shot drilled the far goal post, allowing the Blue and Gold to stay in the lead at 1-0.

Buscaglia capped her career day with less than a minute to play in the contest, as she took a feed from freshman Amanda Wisbeck on the right-side of the box and sent a shot past DeFeo into the goal to give the Griffs the 2-0 victory. The assist for Wisbeck is the first of her college career.

Rossi made three saves for Canisius in the shutout victory, the Griffs' fourth shutout win at home this season. DeFeo was credited with two stops in the losing effort. Fairfield outshot Canisius 13-8 for the game, and the Stags ended the contest with a 4-1 advantage in corner kick chances.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"Paige has been growing in her confidence and will power through out the season. She adds a little bit of a different dimension for us. Today was very important to us, especially, because of the way we started the season and conference play. The game was more about how we would react to the next game, and we won. Now we will need to see how we react after this one going foward."

Game Notes
• Saturday's game was the 27th all-time meeting between the two Jesuit schools, with Fairfield holding a 19-7-1 lead in the series.
• Canisius has now beaten Fairfield in each of the last two seasons, the first time the Griffs have recorded back-to-back regular-season wins over the Stags since the series began in 1992.
• Buscaglia is the first Canisius player to record multiple goals in a game this season.
• Rossi now has 11 career shutouts to her credit. That ranks second-best in school history.
