Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Plays Siena to 2-2 Draw in MAAC Opener

Junior Alex Grattarola and freshman Filippo Tamburini scored to pace Canisius in a 2-2 draw with Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demkse Sports Complex.

In the league opener for both programs, Siena took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as Conor McGlynn received a cross from Frank Cotroneo in the middle of the box and placed the ball in the left side paneling for his first goal of the season.

Canisius tied the game in the 34th minute when Grattarola buried a penalty kick opportunity that was created when junior Hunter Walsh was taken down inside the box.

Tamburini gave the Griffs a 2-1 lead at the 74:37 mark of the contest, receiving a through ball from junior Melvin Blair and racing towards the Siena goal before firing a shot from the middle of the box that Saints keeper Aleksa Radosavljevic got a piece of, but was unable to stop from making its way into the net.

Alejandro Riquelme brought Siena level with a little more than five minutes remaining in regulation when he took a pass from McGlynn and beat Canisius keeper Marco Trivellato with a shot inside the left post from just outside the 18-yard box.

In overtime, Canisius was awarded a second penalty kick when the Saints were whistled for a handball in the box in the final minute of the first overtime session. Grattarola was once again selected to take the kick, but Radosavljevic was able to stop the attempt and keep the score level.

Trivellato made two saves in goal for the Golden Griffins (6-2-1, 0-0-1 MAAC). Radosavljevic finished with eight stops between the posts for the Saints (2-3-4, 0-0-1 MAAC).

Head Coach Dermot McGrane Postgame Comments
"We threw away two points tonight. We had enough chances to score in the second half that it shouldn't have mattered conceding a goal with five minutes to go."

"When you get a penalty kick and the other team goes down to 10 man in overtime you expect to win. I give a lot of credit to Siena for battling hard to the final whistle."
