Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Blair’s Overtime Tally Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Fairfield

Junior Melvin Blair scored in the 105th minute to break a 2-2 tie and lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over host Fairfield in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at Lessing Field.

Sophomore Troy Brady assisted on the game-winning goal and added a first-half tally for the Golden Griffins (7-2-1, 1-0-1 MAAC). The overtime triumph was also the 52nd victory at Canisius for head coach Dermot McGrane, making him the program's all-time winningest head coach.

Marcus Nordgard and Angus Hastings accounted for the two goals by the Stags (5-4-0, 1-1-0 MAAC).

Canisius recorded its third overtime victory of the season thanks to Blair's third goal of season.
Freshman Filippo Tamburini began the decisive sequence, collecting a pass at midfield and bringing the ball deep into the Stags half of the field before playing the ball to Brady, who found Blair near the top of the 18-yard box.

Blair made the most of the opportunity, placing a shot into the lower right-hand corner of the net for the decisive tally.

Earlier in the contest, Brady staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead a little more than 11 minutes in, collecting a feed from junior Bjarki Benediktsson and placing the ball just inside the left post from five yards out to give the Griffs the early advantage.

Fairfield tied the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute when Nordgard knocked home a looseball for his second goal of the season.

Hastings put the Stags in front at the 28:52 mark as headed home a corner kick from Matt McGlinchey to give Fairfield a 2-1 advantage.

Canisius tied the game at 2-2 in the 36th minute when a shot from senior Lucian Preis deflected off Tamburini and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

McGlinchey nearly put the Stags in front less than two minutes into the second half, but his shot found the post. Junior Alex Grattarola also hit the goal frame during the contest, heading a ball off the crossbar during a corner kick opportunity in the first overtime frame.

Senior Marco Trivellato recorded two saves in goal for Canisius. Gordon Botterill notched three stops between the posts for Fairfield.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane Postgame Comments
"I'm very proud of the way our boys played tonight against a very good Fairfield team. The hard work our team put in over the summer and in preseason has paid off in each of our overtime games this year.

"We picked up three very important points tonight, which will make the bus ride home seem not quite as long as usual."
