Women's Soccer Drops MAAC Contest at Monmouth, 2-0

GAME RECAP
Monmouth junior Alli DeLuca scored in the second minute and the host Hawks added another score early in the first half, en route to a 2-0 win over Canisius Saturday afternoon at Hesse Field in West Long Branch, N.J. Monmouth moves to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the MAAC with the victory, while the Golden Griffins fell to 5-4-1 on the campaign and 0-2-1 in league play.

The Hawks second goal came in the 18th minute after Monmouth redshirt-sophomore Madie Gibson beat Canisius goalkeeper Alana Rossi off a crossing-feed from senior Sophie Centi. The cross into the box went past two Griff defenders, finding Gibson's foot, who knocked in it. Gibson was also credited with an assist on the Hawk's first goal. Rossi would go on to save four shots on the afternoon.

Monmouth fired 15 total shots towards the frame, with six going on goal. Canisius was credited with 10 shots on the day. Monmouth goalkeeper Amanda Knaub earned the shutout win in goal after she recorded three saves.

The Hawks ended the contest with a 4-2 advantage in corner kick chances.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"I am obviously disappointed with the result, but overall I am pleased with the effort. We had few lapses in our focus which led to the two goals, but after that I think we played harder. We fought hard until the very last moment in, what I would consider, our best collective team effort of the season."

"Monmouth is good, but we got better as the game went on. If we play like we played today, we will be ready for the rest of the MAAC. Even though we lost 2-0 today, and we are now 0-2-1 in the conference, I think we opened some eyes today. I truly think that we are on the edge of making the turn of becoming a good team."

Game Notes
• This was the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius trailing in the series 1-7-0.
• The Griffs haven't lost back-to-back to games in span of 13 matches dating back to October of last season.
• Canisius' three shots on-goal was the lowest output since the Griffs were held to only one shot on-goal at Toledo earlier in the year.

Up Next
