Marist Posts 2-1 Win Over Women’s Soccer

Game Recap
Canisius senior Taylor Kugler scored her first goal of the season in the game's 10th minute, but the visiting Marist Red Foxes posted the game's next two scores to earn a 2-1 victory in MAAC women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. With the win, Marist moves to 5-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in league action, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in MAAC play.

Kugler put the Blue and Gold up 1-0 in the 10th minute after she was able to settle a loose ball in the box and redirect it past Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley. The Griffs' scoring play was started when sophomore Madeline Beaulieu made a long throw-in toward the box, where both freshman Shauna Lee and sophomore Gretta Dry made a play on the ball for Canisius. Dry's attempted header bounced wide, and Kugler was standing in the box unmarked, where she deposited the ball into the back of the net for the score. That marker stands as Canisius' first goal scored in the first half of a game this season.

Marist knotted the game at 1-1 in the 13th minute when senior Brianna Robinson tallied her second of the season. The Red Foxes took the lead for good at 2-1 in the 28th minute thanks to the first collegiate goal scored by freshman Jillian Colucci. Colucci was able to take a long feed from teammate Taylor Mongno and beat Griffs' goalkeeper Alana Rossi for what ended up serving as the game-winning tally.

Marist controlled the game offensively, as the Red Foxes outshot the Griffs 19-4. Of Marist's 19 shots, 11 were on frame. Foley made two stops in goal for en route to the victory for the Red Foxes, while Rossi was credited with a career-high nine stops in the losing effort.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"Tonight, we came out of the gate pretty strong, but then [Marist] picked up the tempo and they got the goal back right away and continued to play harder than we did. Overall, it was a tough day getting consistent results out of all 11 of the players that happen to be on the field at that time."

Game Notes
• Wednesday's game marked the 22nd all-time meeting between the two programs, with Marist holding a 14-7-1 lead in the series.
• This is the third-straight season where Canisius and Marist have played to a 2-1 final score. The Griffs beat the Red Foxes 2-1 at home in 2015, while Marist earned a 2-1 victory in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., last year.
• Kugler's goal was the fifth of her career, which ranks second among all active players on this year's roster.
• The loss at home ends Canisius' five-game winning streak at home, which dated back to last season.
