Women's Soccer Plays to a Scoreless Draw to Open MAAC Play

Game Recap
Canisius women's soccer played to a scoreless draw versus Iona to open MAAC play Saturday morning at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The tie makes the Golden Griffins 5-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in MAAC play. The Gaels are now 1-6-2, and were shut out for the seventh time on the season.

The Blue and Gold had plenty of scoring opportunities, but could not convert. Sophomore Gretta Dry peppered five shots towards the goal, with four going on net, including one in the 105th minute when the Griffs had a 2-on-1 break out, and Dry's chip went just wide of the post.

Sophomore Madeline Beaulieu and freshman Shauna Lee both had two shots apiece as Canisius finished with seven of its 13 shots going on net and being stopped by the Gaels' senior goalkeeper, Tiffany Martinez.

On the other end of the pitch, Canisius goalkeeper Alana Rossi faced 16 Iona shots and was credited with a season-high six saves, picking up her fifth shutout of the campaign.

Both squads received three corner kick chances on the match, while Iona was accessed 21 fouls to the Griffs 18.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"When you a draw in game, you sometimes consider it a win, and other times you think of it as a loss; today we thought of it as a loss. We had plenty of chances. It was really disappointing. You win, lose or draw as team. We are still lacking a consistent effort from everyone on the field at the same time. We need to get it figured out and have everyone exhibit the passion and effort that I know that we can play with and are capable of."

• Canisius and Iona have now met 30 times, with the Blue and Gold leading the all-time series 15-12-3.
• The Griffs extended their unbeaten streak over the Gaels to three with the draw.
• Rossi's shutout is the 10th of her career, which now moves her into sole possession of fourth place in program history. Former Griff Debbie Besant (1986-89) holds the all-time record with 16.
• The last time the Blue and Gold opened conference play with a tie was in 2006, when the Griffs played to a 1-1 draw against Manhattan.
