Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Drops MAAC-Opening Contest, 3-0 to Rider

Despite eight-kill performances from Leah Simmons and Claire Leonard, the Canisius volleyball team was unable to overcome an efficient Rider offense that hit .310 in a three-set victory (25-11, 25-19, 25-22), to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Golden Griffins dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in conference action, while the Broncs improved to 6-6 and 1-0 in MAAC play.

Rider staked claim to a quick 1-0 lead, dispatching the Griffs, 25-11 in set one. The Blue and Gold clawed back from a 22-16 deficit thanks to a Rider attack error, and kills from Simmons and Andrea Diaz Lopez, making it 22-19, but that's as close as Canisius got, falling in the frame, 25-19.

Down 2-0, and needing to win set three to continue in the match, the Griffs showed fight once again, notching three-straight points, down 22-19, to knot things up, however Rider scored the final three-points of the contest to earn the victory.

Hailey Reide and Jennifer Borio led all players with 11 kills in the contest. Veronica Koval tallied 35 assists and Brynn Sherbert posted 10 digs to round out the Rider leaderboard.

For the Griffs, Simmons had the most efficient day, posting eight kills and a hitting percentage of .389 with just one attack error in 18 tries. Leonard also posted eight kills and an attack percentage of .150.

Cassidy Ceriani led the Blue and Gold in assists and digs, recording 22 assists and 11 digs in the losing effort.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"We're obviously disappointed in the results today," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "Rider was steady throughout the match and we committed too many unforced errors that we couldn't overcome. I thought we fought hard and never gave up, and that is an important quality to have as we move deeper into conference play."

GAME NOTES:
• With the loss Canisius still leads the all-time series against Rider, 25-9.
• The Blue and Gold is now 4-6 in the last 10 against the Broncs.
• Simmons' hitting percentage of .389 marks a season-best for the second-year player.
• Leonard has recorded eight-or-more kills in 10-of-12 matches so far in her freshman campaign.
• With her 22 assists and 11 digs, Ceriani posted her fourth double-double of the season.
