Women's Soccer Scores a 1-0 Victory Over Oakland

Game Recap
Sophomore Madeline Beaulieu scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute and fellow sophomore Alana Rossi posted her second shutout victory of the season in goal as the host Canisius women's soccer team defeated Oakland 1-0 Friday evening in non-conference action at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, the Golden Griffins (3-1-0) are off to their best start through four games since the team opened the 2009 campaign with a 3-0-1 mark. The victory also improved the team to a perfect 3-0-0 at home this season. The Golden Grizzlies fell to 0-5-0 with the loss.

Beaulieu put Canisius ahead for good midway through the second half when she was able to use her head to redirect a rebound in the box, giving the Griffs the 1-0 advantage. The scoring play was set up by freshman teammate Shauna Lee, who attempted the first shot on goal, which was originally saved by Oakland keeper Nadine Maher. The goal for Beaulieu stands as her second game-winning goal of the 2017 season, while the assist for Lee is the first helper in her collegiate career.

Rossi made just one save in goal for Canisius, and that save came in the game's 16th minute. Maher made four stops for Oakland in the loss. The Grizzlies held an 8-7 advantage in shots, while Canisius was credited with three corner-kick opportunities against none for Oakland.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"We talked about the idea that within the first four games, we need to know what our level of consistency is and who we are going to be over and over again. We are going to be slow starters and really inconsistent in the first half, but then we come out in the second half and we are a lot tougher."

"Right now the things we are good at is defending and countering, and the result is being 3-1 for the first time in a number of years. We are winning because the right kids show up on the right day, and we are playing gritty."

Game Notes
• Friday's contest was the first between the two programs in women's soccer.
• With the victory, Canisius improved to 2-0-0 this season against schools from the Horizon League. The Griffs opened the year with a 1-0 OT win against Youngstown State Aug. 18.
• Canisius extended its winning streak to four straight at home, dating back to last season. The win moved the Blue and Gold to 8-2-0 in its last 10 home dates.
• Rossi's shutout is the seventh of her career, with six of those shutout efforts coming on the turf at the Demske Sports Complex.
