Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lee Lifts Women's Soccer Past UB in OT, 2-1

GAME RECAP
Freshman Shauna Lee's first career goal in the game's 98th minute pushed the Canisius women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over cross-town rival Buffalo Tuesday night at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius is now 2-1-0 on the season.

Lee's game-winning tally was set up thanks to sophomore Gretta Dry, who pushed the ball through a crease in the Buffalo backline, before dishing off to Lee, who fired a shot off the far right post, on the ground, and into the cage.

Buffalo struck first, in the game's fourth minute, thanks to a goal by Carissima Cutrona. Cutrona received a pass from teammate Rebecca Bramble and proceeded to chip the ball from the endline, on an angle, over the Golden Griffin sophomore goalkeeper Alana Rossi. That goal was the first given up by the Canisius defense at home this season.

The Bulls controlled most of the first half, leading Canisius 10-6 in shots, as the Griffs were unable to muster a shot on-goal in the first 45 minutes.

That would change when freshman Emily Porteous came onto the pitch at 66:52 and would record her first career goal less than a minute later in the game's 68th minute.

Porteous was fed a crossing pass by sophomore Hope Gilchrist, and she proceeded to dribble in towards the net, unmarked, to the 20-yard line. There, the Mississauga, Ontario fired a shot that hit the far left post in the upper 90, ricocheting across the goal line, and into the net to tie the score at 1-1.

In goal, Rossi made five saves for the Blue and Gold to earn her second victory of the season.

Buffalo goalkeeper Laura Dougall was credited with one save for the Bulls, who fell to 0-3-0 to start the season.

Buffalo ended up out shooting Canisius 17-11, doubled up the Griffs on shots on-goal, 6-3, and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Coach Clark's Post Game Comments
"We always view UB as a very difficult opponent. I think they're a quality collection of young ladies. I think they're very well coached. They've certainly had success in the background of our rivalry, so I don't think it's very difficult to get our players and coaching staff up for it… what's a little different for us this year is we have more depth, so even though there were a couple of players that only played two or three minutes they were really important minutes to give other people a break."

• This was the 42nd all-time meeting between the two schools, with Buffalo leading the all-time series
