Men’s Soccer Falls at Stony Brook in Opener

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook scored twice in the opening 15 minutes of the first half to take control of the contest and defeat Canisius, 2-0, in collegiate men's soccer action Friday at LaValle Stadium.

In the season opener for both programs, Vince Erdei staked the Seawolves a 1-0 lead exactly six minutes into the game when a Stony Brook throw in deflected off a Canisius defender right to Erdei in the middle of the box, where he placed a shot into the right-hand corner of the net.

Rob Bjornholm-Jatta doubled the Seawolves advantage to 2-0 in the 15th minute. During a corner kick opportunity, Stony Brook got a shot off that Canisius senior keeper Marco Trivellato was able to turn aside, only to see the rebound go right to Bjornholm-Jatta at the left post, where he headed home the loose ball.

Canisius had a couple of opportunities to cut into the Stony Brook lead during the second half. Senior Lucian Preis found the left post on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 63rd minute while sophomore Troy Brady had a 1-on-1 situation with Stony Brook keeper Tom McMahon with less than five minutes to play. Brady tried to beat McMahon with a shot to the lower left corner of the cage, but McMahon made a diving save to keep the Golden Griffins off the scoreboard.

Trivellato recorded a career-high nine saves for Canisius. McMahon finished with two saves to record the shutout for the Seawolves.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane Postgame Comments
"We did not show up ready to play today and we dug ourselves a big hole early in the game by conceding two sloppy goals on set pieces and receiving a red card in the first 15 minutes."

"I was pleased with the character the team showed in the second half as they battled hard until the final whistle."
