Women's Soccer Heads Past Youngstown State in OT, 1-0

GAME RECAP
Sophomore Madeline Beaulieu netted her first career goal in the game's 98th minute off a corner kick to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 overtime victory over Youngstown State to open the 2017 season Friday night at the Demske Sports complex. Canisius starts the season 1-0 for the second time in three years.

After playing a scoreless 90 minutes, Canisius controlled possession in the overtime. After a loose ball went over the end line, the Griffs were awarded a corner kick, where junior Emily Czechowski sent a cross into the box in front of Youngstown State goalkeeper Kylee Moffet. Beaulieu was left unmarked on the far post and the Vestel, N.Y., native headed the ball into the upper right hand corner of the cage to seal the victory.

Canisius, who at the start of the extra frame had only recorded one shot on goal, fired three shots to open the period in rapid succession at Moffet resulting in two saves and a ball off the crossbar.

Canisius' continued offense pressure set up the corner kick opportunity, the teams' third of the contest.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alana Rossi made five saves for the shut out victory.

Moffet was credited with four saves for the Penguins, who fell to 0-1-0 to start the campaign.

Youngstown State out shot Canisius 13-7 while being even in shots on goal with five.

Coach Clark's Post Game Comments
"To get a win in any form or fashion is a really big deal and it's at home and in overtime... this is still a younger team. We don't know what we are or where we're going just yet. I think it says a lot that we can come back from an imperfect start. It's very pleasant and a very exciting way to end... we did struggle a bit in terms of the organization of our front runners and the connection to our midfield early on... by the time the day was over, we saw how important that was."

Game Notes
• This was the 15th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius leading the series 9-4-1.
• Canisius has now won each of the last two games between these two programs, both by the score of 1-0. The Griffs last defeated Youngstown State 1-0 in the 2013 campaign.
• Friday's game marked the first time Canisius opened the season with an overtime contest since the 2009 season, where the Blue and Gold played to a 2-2 draw at Youngstown State.
• The overtime win moves the Griffs to 5-0-0 in their last five overtime contests, dating back to the 2014 season.
• Czechowski's last two assists have come on overtime game-winning goals. She also assisted on the game-winning marker in Canisius' 1-0 road OT victory at Saint Peter's Oct. 19, 2016.
• Rossi's win in goal stands as the sixth shutout victory of her career in 18 games played.
• The win on opening night improves Canisius to 2-1-0 under third year head coach Todd Clark.
