Canada WLAX Advances to Play United States In World Games Gold Medal Contest

Team Canada used a well balanced attack and strong defense to defeat Australia for the second time in the World Games in Wroclaw, Poland on Saturday, 14-8. The Canisius contingent was responsible for seven of the teams 15 goals, chipping in one assist, five draw wins and one ground ball. With the win Canada advances to the gold medal game and will face the rival United States.

"It was an all-around team effort today," said head coach Scott Teeter. "Our goal from the beginning was to come out hard and not look back, and we accomplished that. We were able to showcase Canadian-style lacrosse at its finest."

Erica Evans joined Dana Dobbie to lead the attack, as the duo netted a trio of goals each. Both players finished the game with four points. It was Evan's third-straight hat trick in the tournament.

Tessa Chad also frequented the score sheet, notching three goals. Meanwhile Griffs women's lacrosse assistant coach Kaylin Morissette also had a jack-of-all-trades type of day, recording a goal, an assist, five draw wins and one ground ball.

Saturday's opponent was a familiar one, as the teams have locked horns four times during the summer. Canada is 4-0 so far against Australia, most notably defeating the side in the World Cup semifinals for the right to play in the gold medal contest.

The Red and White's opponent in the finals is a familiar one as well, as the team takes on the United States for the third time this summer. Canada has fallen both times against a stout United States squad that has scored 52 goals and only allowed 11 in three contests in the World Games.

The Championship Game will take place on July 30 at 8 a.m. EST. It will be webcast (slight tape delay) by the Olympic Channel, beginning at 9:45 EST.
