Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Records 3-2 Victory Over Sacred Heart

Senior forward David Bennett scored the game-winning goal at the 15:48 mark of the third period to lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart in Atlantic Hockey Conference action Sunday at Webster Bank Arena.

Senior Ryan Schmelzer and junior Felix Chamberland also scored for the Golden Griffins (3-3-1, 3-3-0 AHC). Ruslan Rakhmatov and Jason Cotton found the back of the net for the Pioneers (3-6-0, 1-3-0 AHC)

Bennett's decisive tally gave the Griffs a 3-1 cushion with a little more than four minutes to play as he beat Pioneers netminder Brett Magnus with a shot off the left post from the right faceoff circle just moments after Canisius returned to full strength following a Sacred Heart power play.

Cotton brought the Pioneers within one a little more than a minute later, putting home a loose puck from close range with Magnus pulled to make it a 3-2 contest.

That would be as close as Sacred Heart would get, however, as the Griffs held the Pioneers off the board the rest of the way to post the victory.

Earlier in the contest, Schmelzer staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead at the 16:07 mark of the first period, burying a feed from senior Jeff Murray just under the crossbar from the middle of the slot for his second goal of the season.

Chamberland doubled the Griffs advantage to 2-0 late in the second period, finishing off a 2-on-1 break by converting a pass from junior Dylan McLaughlin for his second goal of the series.

Rakhmatov got the Pioneers on the board with a power-play tally just after the midway point of the third period, unleashing a slap shot from the top of the zone that found the upper left corner of the net to make it a 2-1 contest.

Junior Simon Hofley got the start in goal for Canisius and made 29 saves to record his second victory of the season. Magnus posted 26 saves between the pipes for Sacred Heart.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"That was a hard-fought hockey game. The effort required to win today is going to make us a better team. If that's our effort going over the boards, then we're going to be in a lot of games.

"There were some special moments for certain guys tonight. (Simon) Hofley played great. He had an unbelievable game-saving stop at the end for us. (Alex) Jaeckle's effort preventing a backdoor tap in was huge. Obviously, David Bennett getting the game-winning goal is great timing for him and Jeff Murray had a last-second block on the penalty kill. Those things are huge for any team and they were big plays from great players tonight."
