CANISIUSÂ ATTEMPTS TO IMPROVE TO 2-0 ON THE ROAD
Canisius looks to rebound from a home loss on Wednesday, as the team fell to 2-2 on the year, but if its next game, which happens to be played on the road, goes anything like its first, the Golden Griffins will be above .500 again. Canisius dispatched Bowling Green 71-57 to open its road schedule and will attempt to go 2-0 away from the Koessler Athletic Center. A win against Bucknell on the road on Sunday would give Canisius a 2-0 record on the road for the first time since 2002-03 season. That year Canisius defeated Stetson and Eastern Michigan in a pair of road games at the Eastern Michigan Classic.Â
THREE AMIGOS
Canisius has been bolstered by three of the usual suspects on the Canisius offense, as Sara Hinriksdottir, Maria Welch and Margret Halfdanardottir all average double-digits. Welch and Hinriksdottir are neck-and-neck with 14.5 and 14.3 point per game averages, respectively, while Halfdanardottir is notching 11.5 points per contest. To illustrate how important these players are, through this year and last, totaling 35 games, Canisius has been led in scoring by one of the three players 27 times, or 77 percent.Â
JILL-OF-ALL TRADES
It's no secret that Sara Hinriksdottir has a diverse skill set but that skill set is on full display this season as she is the only Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player to lead their respective teams in points, assists and rebounds. Aside from her 14.5 points per game she is a averaging 9.0 rebounds per contest and 5.7 assists per game. Coming into this game she has hit double-digit points, and tallied over five rebounds and five assists five times in her career, having accomplished the feat twice last year and has done it three times in four games this season.
CONELY WARMING UP
Sophomore Shannon Conely has been introduced to the floor in a slow and deliberate pace so far in her career but in 2017-18, specifically, the second-year guard may be forcing the staff to give her more time. Conely has set her career-high in points three times so far this season, scoring six against Colgate, eight against Bowling Green and most recently nine against Cornell. Conely has done this while getting limited minutes on a very deep Canisius bench. Conely has averaged six points while also averaging just 12 minutes per game. As she continues to show great vision when driving to the hoop, look for her to continue to see playing time and take advantage of her opportunities.Â
ARE YOU SURE YOU'RE A FRESHMAN?
On the roster Olivia Vernon is listed as a freshman, but if you've watched her play, you may not be able to tell. Vernon has started all four games, and is ranked sixth in points per game with a 5.3 mark. She was a huge part of the team's win over St. Bonaventure last Wednesday, putting in the game-winning bucket in the frame's final minute. She totaled 12 points that day and was fierce in the paint, taking down seven boards. Likewise her fellow teammate Anndea Zeigler has seen ton of game action as well, averaging over 15 minutes per game and is averaging six points per game for the Blue and Gold. They allowed the Griffs to have a deeper bench and keep its team more fresh than in years past.Â
RACE TO 1,000
As Canisius continues to push on during the season there appears to be an interesting race going on amongst the team's best players. Both Maria Welch and Sara Hinriskdottir are jockeying to see who will be the next 1,000 point scorer for the program. Coming into the game Hinriksdottir leads with 642, while Welch leads the team in scoring this year is slightly behind with a total of 575. It is a feesible proposition that both players at the conclusions of their careers will be 1,000 point producers as both are on pace to do so. The last 1,000-point scorer in Griffs program history was Kayla Hoohuli who accomplished the feat in 2014-15, as she finished with 1,190 points.Â
