Volleyball Wraps Up 2017 Campaign With 3-0 Loss to Fairfield

The Canisius volleyball program played its final match of the 2017 campaign on Sunday, as the squad fell to the Fairfield Stags, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21), in Fairfield, Conn. With the loss the Golden Griffins finish the season with a 10-18 overall record and an 8-10 conference record, while Fairfield enters the MAAC tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 23-6 and a perfect 18-0 conference record.

It appeared the Griffs were within arms reach of a set-one victory, as it knotted up the score 21-21, however the Stags went on a 4-1 run in the final five points to secure win.

That's as close as Canisius came to Fairfield in the the other two sets, dropping the second frame 25-17 and the third set, 25-21.

The Canisius offense was held in check by the Fairfield, but the Griffs were led by junior Sara Wesley who recorded eight kills and a .316 hitting percentage. Leah Simmons also was a force in the middle, tallying six kills and five blocks for the Blue and Gold.

Cassidy Cerani led the team in assists for the day, tallying 22 and six digs, while Sofia Lopez Acosta paced the team in digs with 15.

Megan Theiler (19 kills) and Skyler Day, paced the Stags offense as the duo posted double-digit kill efforts.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"Our offense was held at bay by Fairfield's defense," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "They did a great job of picking up balls and finishing plays. Our middles showed well and our severing was very aggressive which kept us in the match."
"From preseason to now, there was growth on and off the court," Vazquez said. "That is what I am most proud of. We had a ton of family support and the girls rallied around each other. That is what it's all about."
