Schmelzer Named Candidate for Senior Class Award

Canisius senior forward Ryan Schmelzer has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award, organization officials announced on Wednesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Schmelzer has appeared in 116 games during his time with the Golden Griffins, compiling 28 goals and 53 assists for 81 points. The 2016-17 Atlantic Hockey Conference Best Defensive Forward and All-AHC Second-Team selection is off to a strong start in his senior season, with one goal and four assists through five games.

Schmelzer is a management major who has been named to the Dean's List at Canisius College on three occasions, including the spring 2017 semester. He is also a three-time Atlantic Hockey Conference All-Academic Team selection

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Frozen Final Four® in April.
