Game Recap: Volleyball |

Vollyeball Earns Seventh MAAC Win, Defeating Manhattan, 3-0

The Canisius volleyball program improved to 7-6 in MAAC play on Saturday, as the Golden Griffins defeated Manhattan, 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-21), at the Koessler Athletic Center. Canisius improved to 9-14 overall, while Manhattan dropped to 1-24 and 1-11 in conference action.

The Blue and Gold shook off a rusty first few points in set one, to take the first frame 25-15, and rode that momentum to a 25-12 win in the second set, headed into the intermission.

Manhattan showed fight in the third set, erasing a 19-16, Canisius advantage, notching three-straight points to make it 19-19. Canisius bounced back however scoring six of the next eight points to secure the 25-21 win, and the match victory, 3-0.

Claire Leonard paced the team on offense with nine kills, with Sara Wesley (eight kills) and Leah Simmons (seven kills) also posting strong numbers in the middle. Simmons was a force at the net, tallying seven blocks in the match.

Sofia Lopez Acosta led the team in digs, recording 14 during the match, while Cassidy Ceriani tallied 24 assists.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ
"My overall thoughts are I think we performed very well as a unit and as a team and took advantage when Manhattan made errors," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "We bounced back from a slow start thanks to defense. We picked up our defense, we made sure we were ready and transitioned a little bit faster so we could put more balls in our system."

"I love the way our middles are playing," Vazquez said. "Manhattan actually did a really nice job containing Sara a little bit, teams haven't been able to do that recently, but then Leah stepped up in a big way."

"I think we have stopped weighing things so heavily," Vazquez said. "Every time we step out on the court it's a new opportunity to do something wonderful. I think they are really running with that philosophy right now."
