Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Battles Iona to Scoreless Draw

Senior goalkeeper Marco Trivellato recorded one save to pace Canisius in a 0-0 draw with Iona in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Trivellato posted his fifth shutout of the season for the Golden Griffins (11-3-3, 5-1-3 MAAC) while Juan Alcantara finished with three saves for the Gaels (5-6-4, 4-4-2 MAAC), who earned the sixth and final spot in the 2017 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship with the draw.

Playing in rainy conditions, Canisius had the two best chances to score during regulation as shot from junior Melvin Blair hit the post in the 80th minute while senior Eric Strauchen headed a feed from fellow senior Hakeem Milson off the crossbar in the 89th minute.

Each side had close calls during the first overtime session. After Iona was whistled for a foul deep in their own zone, Canisius senior Lucian Preis ripped a shot that went just wide of the frame. The Gaels countered less than a minute later when Luis Mendoza chipped a shot over the net from close range.

The second overtime period saw Canisius record six shot attempts, including two in the match's final six seconds, but the Griffs could not convert.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane Postgame Comments
"I thought we played well today. I was pleased with our performance. Iona defended us very well tonight. They did a good job keeping us in front of them.

"We hit a post and a crossbar tonight and had a couple other really-good chances. It's unusual for us not to finish at least one of them. But it was a quality game and I thought both teams played very well."

Game Notes
  • Saturday's game was the fourth match to end in a draw in 30 all-time meetings between Canisius and Iona. It was also the first draw between the teams since the 2003 season.
  • The game was the 24th scoreless tie in program history and the first since a 0-0 draw at Niagara last November.
  • The draw moved Canisius into a tie with Manhattan for third place in the league standings with 18 points. The Griffs close the regular season against the Jaspers on Nov. 1 at the Demske Sports Complex.
  • Senior keeper Marco Trivellato posted the 11th shutout of his career on Saturday, moving him into a tie with Nick Christou (1992-95) and Andrew Coughlin (2014-15) for first place on the program's career shutouts list.
