Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Rallies to Earn 3-3 Tie with Colgate

Canisius scored twice in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 3-3 tie with Colgate in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER.

Junior Dylan McLaughlin and sophomore Matt Hoover scored during the final frame while sophomore Jesse Pereira opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the second period for the Golden Griffins (1-1-1). Bobby McMann, Paul Meyer and Trevor Cosgrove accounted for the three goals from the visiting Raiders (2-2-2).

Trailing 3-1 at the start of the third, McLaughlin brought Canisius within one just 34 seconds into the final frame, beating Colgate goaltender Colton Point with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle during a man-advantage opportunity for his second goal of the season.

The Raiders maintained their one-goal lead until the final minute of regulation. With Canisius sophomore goaltender Daniel Urbanl pulled and the extra attacker on, Hoover wired a snap shot just under the crossbar from the middle of the slot to tie the game at 3-3. The officials originally signaled no goal on the play, but their call was overturned upon video review.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius took a 1-0 lead 70 seconds into the second period when Pereira stuffed home a goalmouth feed from sophomore Nick Hutchison to give the Griffs the lead.

McMann tied the game for Colgate on the next shift, beating Urbani with a wraparound attempt for his second goal of the campaign.

The Raiders built a 3-1 lead in rapid fashion during the later stages of the middle frame, scoring twice during a 4-on-4 sequence to build a 3-1 cushion.

Meyer gave Colgate the lead at the 15:31 mark of the second, beating Urbani with a wrist shot in transition from the top of the circles for his first collegiate tally.

Cosgrove doubled the Raiders margin 52 seconds later when his slapshot from left point found its way through traffic and into the Griffs net.

Urbani recorded 37 saves for Canisius. Colton Point posted 32 stops for Colgate.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"That was an exciting college hockey game tonight for sure. I think we've seen that resiliency from our team early on this season and they did it again tonight. I love our compete. I love how the guys just go over the boards and get it done. It was a great effort from everybody and we needed it tonight to get the tie."
