Tamburini Header Lifts Men’s Soccer Past Saint Peter’s, 4-3

Freshman Filippo Tamburini scored in the 81st minute to break a 3-3 tie and lift Canisius to a 4-3 victory over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Saturday at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.
 
Senior Eric Strauchen and juniors Hunter Walsh and Alex Grattarola all scored for the Golden Griffins (9-3-1, 3-1-1 MAAC) while junior Bjarki Benediktsson recorded a career-high three assists. Jordan Jowers scored twice and Tom Coulson also found the back of the net for the Peacocks (1-9-2, 0-6-0 MAAC).
 
Tamburini notched the game-winning marker at the 80:15 mark, heading a ball from Benediktsson into the left side the goal for his seventh goal of the season.
 
Earlier in the contest, Jowers staked Saint Peter's to a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when he placed a shot inside the left post from 10 yards out.
 
Coulson doubled the Peacocks cushion in the in 37th minute, heading home a cross from Ezequiel Cei for his first of the campaign.  
 
Canisius was able to tie the game before the half, using goals from Walsh and Grattarola 2:38 apart late in the opening frame to knot the game at 2-2.
 
Walsh began the sequence at the 38:18 mark of the opening frame, flicking a feed from senior Evan Walsh past Saint Peter's keeper Robbie Anderson to make it a 2-1 contest.
 
Grattarola brought the Griffs level just before the 42nd minute, tapping home a corner kick from Benediktsson on the back post for his sixth goal of the season.  
 
Strauchen gave Canisius its first lead of the game at the 53:12 mark, sliding a ball past Anderson for his first goal of the season.  
 
Jowers tallied his second goal of the game in the 61st minute, converting a penalty kick opportunity to tie the game at 3-3 and set up Tamburini's game-winning heroics.
 
Senior keeper Marco Trivellato recorded one save for Canisius. Anderson posted five stops between the posts for Saint Peter's.

"I felt that the boys battled hard today and I'm obviously pleased with the final result, but we cannot continue to put ourselves in a hole every game by conceding silly goals early."
 
Game Notes
  • Canisius increased its lead in the all-time series against Saint Peters to 16-11-1 with Saturday's victory.
  • The win also extended Canisius' winning streak against Saint Peter's to four games. The Griffs have won each of the last three meetings with the Peacocks by a one-goal margin.
  • The win matches the Griffs program mark for victories in a campaign with nine. Canisius has recorded nine wins in three of the past four seasons (2014, 2016).
  • Junior Bjarki Benediktsson matched a program record with his three-assist effort on Saturday. He is the sixth Griff to accomplish the feat and the first to do so since Alan McGreal had three-assists against Saint Peter's in 2007.
  • Freshman Filippo Tamburini recorded a goal for the fourth time in five games with his game-winning tally in the 81st minute. The goal was also his second game-winning marker of the season.
  • Senior Eric Strauchen became the ninth different Canisius player to record a goal this season with his second-half tally.
