Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Quick Start Sparks Men’s Soccer Past Monmouth

Junior Melvin Blair scored 58 seconds into the contest and Canisius never looked back as it cruised to a 3-0 victory over Monmouth in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Junior Hunter Walsh and an own goal accounted for the other two tallies for the Golden Griffins (10-3-1, 4-1-1 MAAC), who established a program mark for wins in a season with the shutout triumph.

Senior Marco Trivellato got the start in goal for Canisius and made five saves to record his fourth shutout of the season. Bobby Edwards recorded eight stops between the posts for Monmouth (4-8-2, 4-1-1 MAAC).

Blair got Canisius on the board in the opening minute, blasting a feed from freshman Filippo Tamburini past Edwards from the top of the box to give the Griffs an early 1-0 lead.

Walsh doubled the Canisius lead to 2-0 just before the end of the first half, putting home a rebound in the 43rd minute that was created after senior Eric Strauchen rang a shot off the left post from 12 yards out.

Canisius added to its margin in the 86th minute on an own goal as a shot from Blair was stopped by Edwards, but the ensuing rebound deflected off a Monmouth defender and into the net.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"I thought this was one of our best performances of the year.  We brought the right work ethic to the game, and stayed very organized defensively.  When we had the ball, I thought we moved it well and looked dangerous when we were going forward.

"We will enjoy this tonight, then get back to work preparing for another tough game this weekend."

Game Notes
Canisius improved to 3-2 all-time against Monmouth with Wednesday's victory. The contest was the fourth in the five-game series to be decided by shutout.
Wednesday's win established a program mark for victories in a season with 10. The Griffs had won nine or more games on three previous occasions (1980, 2014 & 2016).
Canisius scored three or more goals in a game for the seventh time this season as it improved to a perfect 7-0-0 in those contests.
With his shutout victory, keeper Marco Trivellato moved just one win away from matching Dave Borchard and Andrew Coughlin for first place on the program's career wins list (17). Trivelleato also moved into a tie for third place on the program's career shutout list with his 10th career clean sheet.
Freshman Filippo Tamburini recorded a point for the fifth time in the last six contests with his assist on Blair's game-winning tally in the opening minute.
Junior Hunter Walsh became the fourth different Canisius player to record five or more goals this season with his first-half tally.
