Volleyball Completes Comeback Bid Over Quinnipiac

Box Score

After falling behind 2-0 in the match, Canisius volleyball posted three-straight set wins to complete its comeback bid over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe, Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. With the win Canisius improves to 7-18 overall and 5-11, while Quinnipiac drops to 19-11 and 11-6 in conference action.

The Bobcats opened up fast in the contest, recording set wins in the first two frames, 25-16 and 25-17, as the Griffs headed to the intermission down, 2-0.

However Canisius battled back, reeling off three-straight set wins, 25-23,  25-23 and 16-14, to stun the second-place Bobcats, 3-2.

On a day that the team celebrated its three seniors, all-three players proved to have key contributions. Katlyn Tyler and Jacklyn Malusa led the way offensively, with 16 kills and 13 kills, respectively. Freshman Carly Shifflet also recorded double-figure kills with 11.

Meanwhile fellow senior Gabrielle Vetere recorded a career-match in her final home contest, recording a career-high seven kills and two blocks to aid the Canisius effort.

Cassidy Ceriani posted her 14th double-double of the season, as she recorded 45 assists and 13 digs, while Tyler led the way with 20 digs  as she recorded her own double-double.

Quinnipiac had five players reach double-digits in kills with Natalie Alechko pacing the team. Freshman Maria Pansari had 50 assists, while Alechko also led in digs with 14.

THOUGHTS FROM COACH VAZQUEZ:
"After the first two sets I changed the lineup a bit," head coach Lenika Vazquez said. "When Carly came in she lit a fire. Then i put Vetere in the middle. I have not done that and left her in an entire match this season. I swear that young woman just put it all out there. Whatever she had, she gave it to her teammates and then some and it made a huge impact."

"Defense is what won the match for us today," Vazquez said. "We out dug them and out blocked them. They had a stellar offensive performance. They had a higher hitting percentage than us, but at the same time we showed a lot of grit and when we needed to finiish balls we finished them."

GAME NOTES:
