GAME RECAP:
The Canisius volleyball team returned home on Saturday and prevailed in a five-set marathon match against Manhattan, at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs battled back from a 2-1 deficit, to win the final two frames and secure the victory (25-16, 25-21, 33-31, 25-21, 15-9). With the win the Blue and Gold is now 4-12 overall and 2-5 in conference while the Jaspers are 5-15 and 2-5 in MAAC play.
After an impressive first set win, 25-16, the Griffs were bested in two-sraight frames, with the Jaspers winning 25-21 and 33-31.
Despite the deflating loss in the third frame, the Blue and Gold came out with fire in the fourth, streaking out to a 19-15 lead. Canisius fended off a late Manhattan rally, as the Jaspers went on a 5-3 run to push the score to 22-20. However the Griffs closed out the frame on a 3-1 run, led by Carly Shifflet who recorded two of the final three kills for the Griffs.
In the fifth frame, Canisius Fought back after being down 3-1 early in the set to eventually tie the match at 7-7, thanks to a Shifflet kill. Canisius took lead thanks to a Katlyn Tyler kill a few points later, as the Griffs took the lead 10-9. In the decisive fifth set Canisius never looked back closing out the match with a five straight points to win the set 15-9 and the match 3-1.
The Griffs had four players reach double-figure kills with Jacklyn Malusa and Katlyn Tyler leading the way with 19 each. Malusa led the team in efficiency posting a sparkling .326 hitting percentage, while Tyler was close behind with a .317 hitting percentage.
Cassidy Ceriani just missed out on making history in her first campaign with the Griffs, recording 61 assists during the five-set match, three shy of tying the program record.
Shifflet had her best match as a member of the Blue and Gold as well, recording a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs, to lead the team in defensively. Ceriani (61 assists and 12 digs), and Tyler (19 kills and 15 digs) also recorded double-doubles.

"My first thought about this match is these girls did it. They worked hard. The difference between today and other matches was execution. We had three people hitting over three hundred and one over 400. They just did very well."
GAME NOTES:
• Canisius wins the 40th meeting between the two squads and now leads the all-time seires against the Jaspers, 25-15.
• The Griffs have now won five-straight at home when playing Manhattan, dating back to Oct. 2, 2011.
• Ceriani's 61 assists is the most since 2012 when Sydney Palka recorded 63 in a match.
• Ceriani also posted the most assists by a freshman since Lauren Lakovich tallied 62 in 2004.
• Canisius is now 2-1 in five set matches this season.
• The squad has also excelled at home, having posted a 2-1 record when playing at the Koessler Ahtletic Center.
