Game Recap
Sophomore Felix Chamberland recorded a hat trick on three power-play goals as the Canisius hockey program defeated Robert Morris, 6-3 at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER Friday night. With the win, the Golden Griffins improved their record to 2-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Colonials fell to 1-2-0 overall and 1-2-0 in league play.
Canisius, which scored five power-play goals in the victory, opened the scoring with a goal from Chamberland at 11:31 that was assisted by freshman Matt Hoover and senior Geoff Fortman. Robert Morris would tie the contest a short time later with a goal at 8:52, but Canisius freshman Nick Hutchison tallied his second goal of the season with 5:24 left in the opening period to give the Griffs' a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Griffs added two more power-play goals in the second period. Chamberland netted his second of the contest, before freshman Matt Stief would put home his first career goal with 1:56 remaining in the second to push Canisius' lead to 4-1.
The third period of play would see the Golden Griffins and Colonials trade two goals apiece, with Hoover recording his first goal in a Canisius uniform less than a minute into the final period. Chamberland would add his third power-play marker of the evening at 16:56, making him the first Canisius player to record a hat trick on the power of three power-play goals since former Griff Carl Hudson had three man-advantage markers at Sacred Heart Jan. 23, 2010.
Senior netminder Charles Williams made 27 stops to earn the victory in net for the Blue and Gold, his second win of the season.
