Siena Stifles Women's Basketball 58-52

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius College women's basketball team was outscored 36-23 in the final two quarters on Monday, as the squad fell to Siena 58-52 at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the loss Canisius drops to 7-6 and 2-2 in MAAC play while Siena improves to 7-7 and 4-0 in conference action.

Coming out of halftime with a 29-22 lead, Canisius was outscored 21-9 in the third quarter, as Siena took hold of a lead it never relinquished as the offense went cold down the stretch.

Crystal Porter led the Canisius attack as she scored 12 points on six field goals, while Lauren D'Hont was the only other player to hit double-digits, scoring 10 points, and going 4-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-6 from long-range.

Jasmine Mungo matched a career-high in rebounds, securing 12 boards to lead the squad, while D'Hont dished out four of the Griffs 10 assists.

The Saints had three players score double-digits with Jackie Benitez leading the way with 17 points. Benitez missed out on the double-double, recording seven rebounds. Kollyns Scarbrough and Symone Kelly both scored 13 points, while Kelly led the team in boards with eight.

Neither team managed to shoot over 40 percent in the contest as the Griffs finished shooting 20-of-53 for 37.7 percent, while Siena finished 17-of-44 for 38.6 percent.

The Griffs did manage outrebound the Saints, 35-32, however the squad turned it over 19 times in the loss.

In the first half scoring was hard to come by leading into the first media timeout, as Siena opened the scoring early in the frame but proceeded to go on a scoring draught lasting 4:57, as the Griffs took an early 4-2 lead headed into the first media timeout.

Neither team managed double-digits in the opening frame, as the Griffs took a slim 9-8 lead into the break.

Canisius got the best of Siena in the second frame, building a seven point lead by the end of the quarter, outscoring the Saints 20-14, and taking a 29-22 lead into halftime.

Siena opened the third frame on an 11-2 run, with Canisius first points coming on a pair of free throws nearly five minutes in, giving Siena a lead 35-31 headed into the under 5:00 media timeout.

The Saints finished the third frame outscoring the Griffs 21-9, taking a 43-38 lead to the final stanza.

That momentum carried through into the fourth quarter as the Siena built its lead to 11 points at the midway point, its highest of the game, as the Blue and Gold was unable to close the gap.

Canisius wrapped up its post-holiday homestand with an 0-3 record and 0-2 in the two conference contests.

The Griffs look to get back on track this coming weekend when the squad plays Quinnipiac on Jan. 8 and Iona on Jan. 10. Game times are slated for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
