Women's Basketball Snaps Losing-Skid On Kid's Day

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius College women's basketball snapped its five-game losing streak at the 17th annual Kid's Day on Friday morning, defeating Saint Peter's 54-42 at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the win Canisius improved to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in MAAC play, while Saint Peter's drops to 4-12 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Canisius used a 17-6 run in the duration of the fourth quarter to spark itself to victory, coming into the final frame up by just one, 37-36. The squad's 17 points is the most it scored of any quarter during the game.

Crystal Porter paced the team on kids day scoring 12 points and corralled four rebounds for the Blue and gold. Lauren D'Hont and Tamara Miskovic got close to double-digits, as the duo scored nine points apiece.

Jasmine Mungo helped Canisius win the battle of the glass, 46-37, as she nearly reached double-figures, taking down nine. She also pitched in six points. Miskovic filled in for Tiahana Mills who went down with an injury in the second quarter, and finished the game with five assists.

For Saint Peter's it was the effort of Sajanna Bethea that spurred the Peacocks, as she scored 19 of the team's 42 points, notching a double-double adding 12 rebounds. Talah Hughes also reached double figures as she scored 12 points.

Niether team was overly sharp form the field as the Griffs shot 36.7 percent for the game, bouncing back with a strong second half connecting on 14-of-33 (42.4 percent). Saint Peter's struggled against the Golden Griffin defense, shooting just 28.6 percent from the field, (16-of-56). It's the second time this season that Saint Peter's has registered under 30 percent against the Blue and Gold.

Saint Peter's had a strong first half taking a 37-21 lead into halftime, as the Peacock defense held Canisius to just 29 percent from the floor and just eight field goals.

Canisius turned the tide in the second half however, going on a quick 8-0 run through the first three minutes of the third frame to take the lead, as D'Hont and Miskovic hit 3-pointers and Porter drilled a jumper to force a SPU timeout.

The Griffs took a slight 37-36 lead in the final frame before Canisius went on a 13-2 run in the first 5:45 of the quarter, to put the game away, as the Blue and Gold defeated Saint Peter's 54-42.

The Griffs win continues its dominance on its annual Kid's Day, as Canisius is now 9-3 in the last 12. Canisius' Kid's Day promotion also continues to be an unmitigated success, making it seven-straight seasons that Canisius has boasted a capacity crowd of over 2,200 local area students.

Canisius will attempt to start a new streak on Sunday when Quinnipiac comes to town. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the Koessler Athletic Center.
