NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Canisius College volleyball team (5-11, 3-1) outlasted the Iona Gaels (3-12, 1-4) in a five-set thriller, in New Rochelle, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs split this weekend's MAAC roadtrip to remain over .500 in conference play.

"It wasn't our best weekend of volleyball," head coach Cathy Hummel said. "However we figured out how to get a much needed road win. We'll go home now and regroup and get ready for next weekend."

As a team the Blue and Gold proved to be efficient, registering a .229 hitting percentage, tallying 65 kills and just 22 errors on 188 attempts. Iona was just as efficient, producing a .286 hitting percentage, notching 70 kills and 17 errors on 185 attacks.

Canisius also produced three double-doubles on the day, led by Katlyn Tyler's 18 kills and 17 digs. Jacklyn Malusa also registered a double-double, tallying 14 kills and 11 digs, while Grace Streicher also got in on the action with 49 assists (tying a career-high) and 14 digs.

The Griffs opened up with two-straight set wins, edging out Iona, 28-26, and 25-23, going into the break.

Out of the timeout, it was a different story as the Gaels fought back, winning the third and fourth sets by identical 25-21 scores to force a decisive fifth frame.

In the final stanza the Iona got out to an early 7-5 lead before Canisius fought back, going on a 7-2 run to make it 12-9. The Griffs continued to maintain its advantage through the rest of the set, as Tyler slammed down a match-deciding kill to clinch the set 15-12.

Canisius returns home next week as it continues it's conference season. The Griffs host Marist on Saturday and Siena on Sunday. Both matches begin at 1 p.m.
