Monmouth Posts 5-0 Win Over Women's Soccer

The Canisius women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss to Monmouth Saturday afternoon, moving their record to 2-7-2 on the season.

The Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of action, leaving the Golden Griffins with a steep hill to climb for the rest of the contest.

The Griffs were unable to produce many scoring opportunities, as the host Hawks continued their strong play throughout, taking a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

The second half had similar results for Canisius as they gave up two more goals, cementing the victory for Monmouth.

"Monmouth, in my opinion is the class of the MAAC," said head coach Todd Clark. "To play against them in any circumstance is always going to be a challenge. We couldn't do anything but play perfectly against them and we didn't do that today."

Junior Erica Murphy scored two goals in the contest for the Hawks giving her a team leading eight tallies on the year.

Although the team has struggled of late, Clark still sees potential in his squad moving forward.

"We know we have more challenges in front of us, and our staff and kids will keep plugging away to make each match better until we get the results we desire," said Clark. "We're mythical creatures after all as Griffs so we have to aspire to do the things others believe may not be possible."

The Griffs will return home to play MAAC-rival Marist on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 4 p.m. That game will be broadcast live throughout New York State on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. A live video stream will be provided through GoGriffs.com, but due to local blackout rules, the game will not be streamed in New York State.

Game Notes: Canisius faced Monmouth for the sixth time in program history today and now hold a 1-5-0 record against the Hawks.... The Golden Grifins were outshot in the game 20-5 with a 9-1 margin in shots on goal... Monmouth also held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks... Wednesday's home date with Marist will be the team's first since Sept. 6.... The Blue and Gold is 1-1-1 in three home contests to date this season.
