Women's Soccer Defeats Marist in Overtime Thriller

The Canisius women's soccer team pulled out a thrilling 2-1 double overtime victory over Marist this afternoon, moving their record to 3-7-2 on the season.

Freshman Emily Kuta secured the win for the Golden Griffins scoring on a deflected shot by freshman Emma Westwater, which rolled perfectly to Kuta for an open look.

Kuta's shot, taken from the far right corner of the box, flew just over the head of Marist goaltender Ashley Houghton to give the Griffs the victory.

The Golden Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute of play after sophomore Sam Gagliano scored on a no look shot off of a thrown in by Junior Callie Good.

The Canisius defense hung tough throughout with the majority of action taking place in the team's own territory. The Griffs would go on to lose the shot battle, but had strong play from senior goaltender Kailee DeFranks.

DeFranks made 11 saves on 27 shots overall, including a dramatic save on a penalty kick by Marist's Hope Quinonez early in the second overtime period.

The lone goal given up by the senior was deflected in by her own team during a scrum off of a corner kick that tied the game for the Red Foxes in the 55th minute.

The gritty performance by the Griffs saw the team get two yellow cards to go along with a yellow and red card for the Red Foxes.

With the win, the team moves to 2-1-1 at home this season and will look to continue the strong home play when they take on Fairfield this Saturday Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
