Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius College Volleyball team (3-10, 1-0) won dramatic first and fourth sets to claim a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac (1-10, 0-1) at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Senior Lauren Siebert notched career-high 21 kills to lead the team to victory.
“Running the middle certainly worked today,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “Lauren had an incredible match and Grace was able to find her in critical times which was important.”
Aside from a third set hitting percentage of .000, the Griffs posted strong numbers, finishing the match with a .190 mark, notching 59 kills on 153 total attempts. Quinnipiac struggled with its hitting efficiency recording a mark of .118.
Siebert's career-best paced the squad, while Katlyn Tyler and Jacklyn Malusa recorded double-digit kills each with 14 and 10, respectively. Grace Streicher served as the primary setter and matched her career-high in assists with 49.
Both Rachel Kline and Jordan Tylec both came close to 20 digs apiece as Kline finished with 18, while Tylec set a new career-high with 19.
Quinnipiac provided to be a stiff test for the Griffs right from the opening serve, as the squad jumped out to an 18-15 lead. With the score 23-18, the Griffs proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to take the lead 24-23. Despite failing to convert on two set points, the Griffs managed to take the first stanza thanks to a kill by Malusa, to make it 28-26.
The Griffs appeared to be in control following a 25-15 second set victory. However out of the break the Bobcats recorded a hitting a .200 hitting percentage while the Griffs recorded .000 mark to win the third set 25-21.
Quinnipiac used the momentum from the third set win in the fourth, going on an early 10-5 run. The Griffs kept chipping at the lead, using a 11-6 run to knot the score at 16-16. A pair of service aces by Julia Hrycyk gave the Griffs a 20-18 lead later in the frame, and the squad didn't look back from there, winning the frame 25-20.
Canisius will wrap up its opening MAAC weekend tomorrow at the Koessler Athletic Center when the squad hosts Fairfield at 1 p.m. The match will be shown live on ESPN3.
