Volleyball Drops Eagle Challenge Finale

Box Score

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Canisius College volleyball team (0-3) wrapped up its season-opening tournament with a three-set loss to the Marshall (3-0) on Sunday afternoon. The squad kept pace with the Herd in the first two sets before Marshall dominated the final frame to notch its third victory of the tournament.

“We made some adjustments to our game however the overall outcome didn't change," head coach Cathy Hummel said. "It's clear what we need to work on and what we need to do to continue to do well. We look forward to another challenge tomorrow."

The Blue and Gold struggled with its offensive efficiency during the match as the squad finished with a .039 hitting percentage. Meanwhile Marshall finished the contest with a .232 hitting percentage.

Katlyn Tyler tallied the most kills in the contest for Canisius, recording 11, with a .105 hitting percentage. The third-year player was also just two digs short of a double-double, after notching eight. Grace Streicher recorded the second double-double of the weekend for Canisius as she recorded 17 assists and 14 digs. Her 14 digs was one short of her career-high.

Marshall had three players reach double-digit kills, as Ally Kiekover, and Cassie Weaver recorded 13, while Taylor Pelton notched 10. Kayla Simmons had 28 assists to lead the team while Shelby Conley led the squad with 14 digs.

The first set was a tight one between the Herd and Griffs as neither team held more than a three-point advantage through much of the stanza. Marshall broke through late in the set, as the squad scored three-straight points to take a 24-19 lead over Canisius.

With set point at hand for the Herd, Canisius staved off the loss for three-straight points as Tyler and Lauren Siebert recorded kills in the effort. Out of a timeout by Marshall with the score 24-22, Taylor Pelton put the set away with a kill to make it 25-22.

Canisius kept the second set close early-on with a 7-6 score but the Herd grabbed control of the frame going on a 11-5 run to make it 18-11. However just when Canisius appeared to be down-and-out, trailing 21-16, the Griffs put together a 5-2 run thanks to a pair of kills by Tyler and Rachel Kline, coupled with errors by the Herd to make it 24-20. However out of the timeout Marshall put the stanza away with two-straight kills, giving Marshall a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Herd came out in the third set and left little doubt in the match, taking the third frame, 25-7 to win the match 3-0.

Canisius ends the weekend with its fourth match of the season on Sunday, as the Griffs will travel to Moon Township, Pa., to take on Loyola (Md.) in a tournament hosted by Robert Morris. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
