Canisius freshman pitcher Madi Weathers was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after she went 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA and 13 strikeouts last week in the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. Weathers is the third Golden Griffin to win a weekly award from the MAAC this season, joining with previous MAAC Player of the Week honorees Samantha Sharkey and Lindsey Silfer.
Weathers was the tough-luck loser in Canisius' 4-3 loss to Western Michigan March 13, but she bounced back and posted a complete-game victory March 14 as the Blue and Gold beat UMass 2-1, the program's first win over the UMass squad since May 8, 1993. On March 15, Weathers went eight innings and allowed three runs while fanning seven in Canisius' 4-3 come-from-behind win over Hartford. In her three starts last week, she allowed a total of 16 hits, but only four of those were for extra-bases.
Canisius (5-8) returns to action Tuesday afternoon with a split non-league doubleheader at USF in Tampa, Fla. The Griffs will meet Hartford at 2 p.m., before playing the host USF Bulls at 7:15 p.m.
