Softball Pounds Hartford, Falls to USF

The Canisius softball team pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits and freshman pitcher Erika Mackie tossed her second one-hitter of the season on Tuesday as the Golden Griffins defeated Hartford 11-0 in five innings at USF Softball Stadium in Tampa, Fla. Canisius' win over the Hawks, the team's second over Hartford in the last two days, moved the squad to 6-8 on the season, while Hartford fell to 1-16 with the loss.

In the second game of the split non-league doubleheader, USF pitcher Erica Nunn allowed three hits and struck out nine Canisius batters and the host Bulls broke the game open with four runs in the fourth as USF (28-8) defeated the Blue and Gold 7-0. Canisius is now 6-9 in 2015.

In the first game, Canisius junior Bethany DeMarco went 3-for-3 with three RBI while senior Robin Kennery also went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the mercy-rule win, the team's second mercy-rule victory of the 2015 campaign. The Griffs led 1-0 after two innings and then broke the game open with a four-spot in the third before tacking on six more runs in the fourth. Mackie earned her third win of the season in the circle for the Griffs, with the only blemish on her day coming with two outs in the fifth when Hartford's Marissa Feguson broke up the Scranton, Pa., native's no-hit bid with a base hit to left field.

Kennery, junior Alexis Roman and sophomore Samantha Sharkey had base hits in the loss to USF, as the Bulls scored three runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Freshman pitcher Madi Weathers, who was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week earlier in the day on Tuesday, took the loss for the Griffs after she allowed seven runs, five earned, on nine hits in four innings of work. Canisius was charged with three errors in the loss to the Bulls.

Canisius will return to action on Wednesday, March 18, when the team plays Army in a non-league doubleheader in Clearwater, Fla.
