Softball Ends Spring Break With a Sweep of Army

The Canisius softball team ended its Spring Break trip to Florida by sweeping Army in a non-league doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, taking game one 6-3 before winning game two by the score of 7-1. Canisius has now won three of its last four and the team heads back north after posting a 6-3 record in the Sunshine State. The Golden Griffins are 8-9 on the season.

In the first game, Canisius trailed the Black Knights (7-15) by the score of 2-1 after three frames, but a single-run in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth moved the Griffs ahead 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth. In the top-half of the fifth, senior Robin Kennery put Canisius ahead for good with an RBI-single to right, and later in the inning, Canisius sophomore Jessica Berzins scored on a wild-pitch to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Blue and Gold. After Army cut the Griffs' lead to 4-3 with a run crossing the plate in the bottom of the fifth, Canisius answered with two insurance runs in the seventh. Those two runs were driven in by junior Alexis Roman, who finished the first game by going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Madi Weathers went five innings for the Griffs in the circle, where she allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits. She earned her fourth win on the year with the victory, while fellow freshman pitcher Erika Mackie earned her first career save after she tossed two scoreless innings.

Canisius had nine hits in the game one win, led by Roman's three hits on the day. Kennery and Berzins each had two hits, scored a run and knocked in a run in the winning effort.

In the nightcap, Canisius scored twice in the third, twice in the fourth and three more times in the fifth en route to the 7-1 win. Berzins went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the game two win. By reaching base safely in both games on Wednesday, Berzins extended her streak of getting on base to 31-straight games, which is every game the team has played since April 12, 2014. Junior Bethany DeMarco went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while Kennery added two hits in the game two win, as did sophomore Lindsey Silfer.

Mackie picked up the victory for Canisius in the circle after she allowed just one run on four hits to go with two strikeouts. She is now 4-4 on the year.

Canisius will be off until March 24, when the team travels to Syracuse to meet the Orange in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one of the twinbill is set for 3 p.m.
