Softball Uses Late Rally to Beat Hartford

Trailing 3-0 in the seventh inning, Canisius scored three times in the seventh and then won the game with one out in the eighth, as the Golden Griffins came back to defeated Hartford 4-3 in eight innings Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The win moves Canisius to 5-8 on the season, while Hartford fell to 1-14 with the loss.

Hartford scored three times in the first inning and held that lead until the seventh, where the Griffs started off the bottom of the frame with back-to-back base hits by freshman Moriah Harris and sophomore Sarah Andrews. Junior Meghan Cuda drove in two runs with a triple to right, and then she socred moments later on a sac-fly by sophomore Jessica Berzins which knotted the game at 3-3.

In the eighth, sophomore Lindsay Silfer started the Griffs' half of the inning at second thanks to the international softball tie-breaker rule. She advanced to third on a bunt base hit by sophomore Samantha Sharkey, and she later scored on a sac-fly by junior Alexis Roman. The win improved Canisius to 1-2 in extra-inning games this season.

Freshman Madi Weathers improved to 3-3 on the year after she went the distance and allowed three runs on five hits while fanning seven. Berzins, DelPrince, Sharkey and Roman all had multi-hit games in the win for the Blue and Gold, with DelPrince adding a triple to the game-winning effort as well.

Canisius will return to action on Tuesday, March 17, when the team plays a split doubleheader at USF. The Blue and Gold will meet Hartford at 2:15 p.m., before taking on the host USF Bulls at 7:15 p.m.
