Softball Splits a Pair in Clearwater

Canisius sophomore Lindsay Silfer had a ground-out RBI in the fifth and freshman Madi Weathers made that lead stick, as the Golden Griffins defeated UMass 2-1 at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater, Fla., Saturday morning. The win was Canisius' second straight and improved the team to 4-7 on the year. In the nightcap however, Canisius (4-8) registered just four hits and lost to Northern Illinois 2-0.

In the victory over UMass, Weathers went the distance and picked up the win in the circle after she allowed just one run on five hits while fanning four. Canisius trailed 1-0, but the Blue and Gold tied the game at 1-1 in the top-half of the second frame when sophomore Samantha Sharkey roped an RBI-triple to push teammate Alexis Roman to score. Canisius took the lead for good in the fifth on Silfer's RBI-groundout.

Sophomore Jessica Berzins and senior Michelle DelPrince had two hits each in the win for Canisius, the program's first win over UMass (4-7) in softball since May 8, 1993.

In the second game, Northern Illinois (10-12) starter Keegan Hayes allowed just four hits and fanned two as the Huskies posted a 2-0 win over Canisius. The game was scoreless through three frames before Norther Illinois scored twice in the top-half of the fourth an an RBI-double by Bekah Harnish. The double was the only extra-base hit in the game. Freshman Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle after she allowed just two run on seven hits in seven innings.

Canisius will close out its stay at the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament on Sunday when the team meets Hartford. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
