Mackie's One-Hitter Leads Softball to Win

Canisius scored an unearned run in the second and freshman Erika Mackie made it hold up as she went the distance and allowed just one hit as the Golden Griffins recorded a 1-0 win over Towson Friday afternoon in Tampa, Fla. Canisius opened the day by falling to Western Michigan 4-3.

Mackie walked four and fanned two in her second career win in the circle. Canisius' lone run in the game came in the top-half of the second when sophomore Taylor Decker scored from third on a fielding error by Towson's centerfielder. Canisius sophomores Jessica Berzins and Samantha Sharkey each had two hits in the win for the Blue and Gold.

In the first game of the day, Canisius (3-7) lost to Western Michigan 4-3. Canisius trailed 3-0 before an RBI-triple by Kennery knocked in two Canisius runs in the fourth. The Griffs tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on an RBI-single by Berzins, but the Broncos (6-10) pulled ahead for good with a single tally in the home-half of the sixth.

Canisius will play a pair of games on game two of the Michelle Smith Spring Break Tournament in Clearwater, starting at 9 a.m., on Saturday when the team plays UMass.
