Softball Falls to Cornell 7-6 in Extra Innings

An RBI-single by Cornell's Chloe Pendergast with one out in the top of the 8th inning help push the Big Red to a 7-6 win over Canisius Sunday morning in the Golden Griffins' final game of the weekend at the Grand Athletic Complex in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The win improved Cornell to 1-4 on the year while the Blue and Gold fell to 2-6 with the loss.

Canisius forced extra innings on Sunday by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game at 6-6. In that frame, Canisius made it a one-run contest at 6-5 when sophomore pinch-hitter Sarah Andrews ripped an RBI-single to center that allowed junior Alexis Roman to score from third, and moments later, senior Michelle DelPrince drove in the game-tying run with a sac-fly to right.

In the eighth, Cornell placed a runner at second base to start the frame in accordance with the international softball tie-breaking rule, and that runner would eventually score the go-ahead run on an RBI-single Pendergast. Canisius advanced its base-runner to third base on a sac-bunt by senior Robin Kennery in the bottom-half of the eighth, but Cornell pitcher Maddie Orcutt ended the game by getting throwing a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Roman went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss for Canisius, while sophomore Lindsey Silfer went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored after she hit her team-leading third home run of the season in the first inning. Sophomore Samantha Sharkey also hit a homer in the game for the Blue and Gold while scoring two runs and knocking in a pair.

Freshman Madi Weathers took the loss in relief for Canisius. She threw three innings and allowed two runs on five hits while fanning four. Freshman Erika Mackie started the game in the circle for the Griffs and she allowed five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out one in five innings of work.

Canisius will return to action March 13, when the team starts its Spring Break trip in Florida. The Griffs will play Western Michigan March 13, at 11:15 a.m., in their first game at the USF Clearwater Tournament in Tampa, Fla.
