Softball Drops a Pair to Start 2015

The Canisius softball team opened the 2015 season on Saturday with a pair of losses at the CSU Dome Tournament, hosted by Cleveland State. The Golden Griffins dropped the first game of the day to the host Vikings by the score of 8-4, before falling to Bucknell 9-4 in the afternoon.

In the first game, Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after senior Michelle DePrince scored on a throwing error. DelPrince reached third thanks to her first tripe of the season. Cleveland State (3-0) answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, and then the Vikings took a 5-1 lead with two more runs in the home-half of the third.

Canisius trailed 7-2 heading into the sixth before plating two runs. Both of those runs came on a two-run bomb by sophomore Lindsey Silfer, her first homer of the season. Senior Robin Kennery, who was one base thanks to a base hit earlier in the frame, also scored on the play.

Silfer went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in the loss, while sophomore Samantha Sharkey went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the loss. Freshman pitcher Erika Mackie took the loss in her first career game for the Blue and Gold after she allowed six runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out three in four innings of work.

In the second game, Bucknell (1-0) opened its 2015 season with a 9-4 win thanks to three RBI from first baseman Erin Cox. The Bison jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Canisius answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the third. In that frame, DelPrince knocked in two runs with a triple to the gap in right center, and Kennery added an RBI-double to the effort. The Blue and Gold knotted the game at 4-4 in the fourth on an RBI-base hit by sophomore Jessica Berzins, but Bucknell answered with two runs in the top of the fifth and then three more insurance runs in the seventh. Berzins and Kennery each had two hits in the loss to Bucknell, while DelPrince drove in two RBI. Mackie again took the loss in the second game after she allowed six runs on nine hits while walking four in 4.2 innings of work.

Canisius will close out its weekend in Cleveland on Sunday with a pair of games against Toledo (10:30 a.m.) and Bowling Green (3:30 p.m.).
