Softball Splits with Army and Brown

The Canisius softball team went 1-1 on Saturday, falling to Army 4-2 in nine innings before bouncing back to drop Brown 6-2. In the win over Brown, freshman pitcher Erika Mackie earned her first career win in the circle and fellow freshman Madi Weathers earned her first career save.

Canisius scored four times on Brown and never looked back as the team improved to 2-5 on the season with the win over the Bears. Sophomore Lindsey Silfer ripped a two-run homer in the top-half of the first and senior Robin Kennery drove in a run in the first as well. Those runs were more than enough support for Mackie, who picked up the victory after she allowed two runs on seven hits to go with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work Weathers earned the save after she walked two and struck out one in 1.2 innings of action.

In the loss to Army, Canisius knotted the game at 1-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when junior Alexis Roman scored on a fielding error by Army. The Black Knights took a 2-1 lead in the top-half of the eighth, but the Blue and Gold forced the game to the 9th after sophomore Jessica Berzins ripped an RBI-double to right. Army took the lead for good in the ninth on the power of a two-run homer by Kasey McCravey.

Roman had two hits in the loss for the Blue and Gold, while Weathers ended up as the tough-luck loser in the circle after she went the distance and gave up eight hits while striking out two.

Canisius will close out its weekend in Myrtle Beach on Sunday morning when the Griffs take on Cornell. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
