Softball Picks Up First Win in 2015

The Canisius softball team scored three runs in each of the first two innings and then posted five runs in the fourth to record a 12-3 win over Cornell in five innings Friday evening at the Grand Park Athletic Complex in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The victory improves Canisius to 1-4 on the season and stands as the first career win for first-year head coach Kim Griffin, while the Big Red fell to 0-1 with the loss in their season opener.

Canisius scored three runs in the top-half of the first on RBI-singles by senior Robin Kennery and sophomore Samantha Sharkey. Sophomore Lindsey Silfer also had a groundout-RBI in the fram as well. After the Big Red scored twice in the bottom of the first to make the score 3-2, Kennery hit a three-run bomb with two down in the second to give the Griffs a 6-2 advantage.

In the fourth, Canisius broke the game open with five runs, highlighted by an RBI-double by junior Alexis Roman that knocked in a pair. Sharkey and junior Tori Nappo also had RBI-singles in that frame and in the top of the fifth, senior Michelle DelPrince ripped her first homer of the season to put the Blue and Gold up 12-2.

Freshman Madi Weathers earned her first career win in the circle for the Griffs after she went five innings and gave up three runs on five hits while walking two.

Canisius will play two games on Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m., when the Griffs take on Army.
