Griffs Fall in Final Seconds to Stags

Box Score

The Canisius College women's basketball team traveled to Fairfield, CT on Friday evening and in a game that was played on ESPN3, the Golden Griffins fell to the Stags, 61-58. With the loss the Griffs fall to 8-16 overall and 6-9 in the MAAC and the victory improves Fairfield to 12-13 and 11-5 in the conference.

Canisius was led by senior Kayla Hoohuli who scored 13 points and secured three boards in 36 minutes of action and sophomore Lauren D'Hont just missed matching her season-high in points (14) with 12 of her own. D'Hont also secured a career-high eight rebounds in the loss.

With five minutes left in the first half, the Stags led the Griffs 20-14 and seemed to be pulling away, but head coach Terry Zeh's team wouldn't back down and went on an 11-6 run to close out the first half and head into the locker room down just one point.

For the first nine minutes of the second half, the two MAAC foe's would go back and forth as neither team led by more than three points in that span. But the Stags went up six with 10:13 left in regulation and the home team wouldn't trail again for the rest of the game.

After being up as much as nine points with just over three minutes left to play, the Griffs made a late run in the second half led by Hoohuli. The senior scored five points in the final three minutes of action, but that wouldn't be enough as the Stags went up three points with 13 seconds left to play, putting the game away.

The Griffs next game will be on Sunday against Quinnipiac, when the two MAAC rival's play at 1:00 p.m. Canisius fell to the Bobcats at home earlier this season, 86-66.

Game Notes: The loss to the Stags was the second this season for the Blue and Gold, as the team fell to the MAAC opponent last week at the KAC...freshman Abby Schwenk made a second consecutive start for the Griffs, the second start of her career...the six points by Laniere Coleman was her highest total since January 18, when she scored six against Saint Peter's....Canisius is now 35-22 all-time against the Stags.
