Volleyball Sweeps Saint Peter?s On Senior Day

Box Score

In the final match of the regular season, the Canisius College volleyball team, defeated Saint Peter's, 3-0, as the team celebrated the careers of four impactful seniors, who played their final match at the Koessler Athletic Center, Sunday. With the win, Canisius ends its season with a 11-19 overall record and 9-9 in MAAC play. Saint Peter's finishes the season 4-24 and 2-16 in conference play.

Despite completing the weekend with a perfect 2-0 record, against Rider and Saint Peter's, Canisius will miss the postseason tournament for the first time since 2013, as the squad finished in a tie for the sixth spot, but Niagara secures the position due to having holding the edge in the tiebreaker. The Purple Eagles swept the season series with Canisius and will head to the MAAC tournament next week.

“I've been proud of this team all year,  they've fought through a lot of adversity this season,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “The last three weeks was some of our best volleyball, and we did what we had to do, but in the end it wasn't enough. In the double-round-robin format, tiebreakers are made and broken and we fell short.”

Fitting for senior day, fourth-year starter, Lauren Siebert led the team with 13 kills and just one error, to post a .600 hitting percentage. Her accuracy has separated herself in the MAAC as she is poised to end the regular season with the best hitting percentage in the league for the second-straight year.

Katlyn Tyler and Jacklyn Malusa also notched double-figure kill-totals with 11 and 10, respectively. Tyler completes her strong weekend with her second-straight double-double, as she notched 10 digs and posted a hitting percentage of .267.

Rachel Kline originally started as libero, but senior Jordan Tylec played the final two sets in the position as she posted 12 digs to finish her career. Likewise Kline completed her senior-campaign with a 15 dig performance.

Grace Streicher also started as the setter as she has most of the season and registered 36 assists and 12 digs for the double-double.

Canisius controlled play throughout the match as it took the three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-21, to complete the sweep.

Aside from the match itself, Canisius honored its seniors, Kline, Siebert, Streicher and Tylec all played their final home game of their careers. Streicher ends her career ranked third in program history in assists with 2,694, while Siebert concludes her career ranked fourth all-time at Canisius in hitting percentage with a mark of .298.  Kline, aside from being named to the MAAC preseason team this season, earned a All-MAAC second-team nod in 2014, while Tylec posted a career-high matches played this season with 24 and averaged a digs-per-set average of 2.79.
