Volleyball Gets Tripped Up by Siena at Home

Siena junior Briana Flagg posted a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs and freshman Darby Taylor added a team-high 15 kills to go with four digs and two block assists to help lead the visiting Saints to a 3-1 win over Canisius Sunday afternoon in MAAC volleyball action. Siena won the match by scores of 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 8-7 on the year and 5-1 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 5-13 overall, 3-3 in conference action.

Canisius junior Katlyn Tyler had a team-high 15 kills and was credited with 13 digs in the losing effort for the Griffs, while senior Rachel Kline posted 11 kills and eight digs for the day. Senior Lauren Siebert added eight kills and four block assists to Canisius' effort, as the Blue and Gold ended the contest hitting .161 for the four-set match.

Siena took the first set by a score of 25-18 before the Griffs bounced back to even that match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory. That set, which featured 13 ties and seven lead changes, turned when Canisius scored three-straight points to take a 20-18 lead, capped by a kill from Tyler. The Griffs took a 22-19 later in the set on an attack-error by Flagg, and back-to-back kills by Tyler gave Canisius a 24-20 advantage late in the set. The Blue and Gold closed out the set and evened the match at 1-1 on a kill by Kline off an assist from Grace Streicher, who ended the contest with 38 assists and seven digs.

Out of the intermission, Siena hit .176 in the third set to record a 25-19 victory and then the Saints hit .243 with 15 kills and just six errors on 37 swings in the fourth and deciding set. Canisius hit just .086 in set three before hitting .176 in the fourth set.

Siena's Haley Howell recorded 42 assists and 11 digs in the win for Siena, which has now won six of its last seven outings. Junior Jacklyn Malusa was credited with six kills and three block assists for the Griffs in the loss.

Canisius returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when the team travels north to meet long-time rival Niagara. Game time in the Gallagher Center is set for 1 p.m.
