Marist Spoils Volleyball?s Return Home, 3-1

Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Canisius College volleyball team, returned home to continue its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate Saturday afternoon, but the homecoming was spoiled, as the Marist Red Foxes reeled off three-straight set victories following an opening set loss, to win the match, 3-1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-21). With the win Marist improves to 10-6 and 3-2 in conference, while Canisius drops to 5-12 and 3-2 in MAAC play.

“My hats off to Marist because they played with a lot of energy and a lot of courage,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “The unwillingness to play courageous and not go for points was our downfall. It's a tough lesson to learn but if we don't learn it soon we're going to have a lot less winning in our future.”

The Griffs came into the contest with the second-best hitting percentage in the conference but managed just .089, registering 33 kills and 21 errors on 135 attacks. Meanwhile the Red Foxes tallied an efficient .289 hitting percentage, tallying 60 kills and 19 errors on 142 attacks.

As she has done all season, Katlyn Tyler led the team in kills with 11, but registered six errors for a .125 hitting percentage. No other Canisius player registered double-figure kills, as Jacklyn Malusa's seven, was next highest on the squad.

Grace Streicher, who entered the contest averaging over 40 assists during the last five contests, managed just 24 assists in the match. Jordan Tylec served as the team's libero and led the squad with 15 digs.

The Griffs began the match with a impressive 25-22 first set victory to take an early 1-0 lead. However, as has been the case with Marist this season, the squad shook off the early-set struggles and rolled to a 25-10 second set win to head to the break tied 1-1.

Despite a late comeback in the third frame, the Griffs fell 25-19 as Marist took its first advantage of the match.

In what turned out to be the decisive fourth frame, Canisius showed more fight, coming back from a 14-11 advantage, scoring three of the next five points to knot the match up at 15-15.

An attack error by Kelsy Ediger, points later, gave the Griffs a lead late, with a 17-16 score. The Red Foxes took control thereafter, going on  9-4 to finish the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

The Griffs look to rebound, and do-so in a big way on Sunday, as the squad hosts the 2014 MAAC Champion, Siena Saints. Start time is slated for 1:04 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

GAME NOTES:
With the loss the Griffs now hold a 19-12 advantage all time against Marist … Under head coach Cathy Hummel, Canisius is 7-5 at home against the Red Foxes … Streicher had her lowest assists output she's had in the last five contests, with 24 today. She had been averaging 40 assists per game during that stretch … Siena comes to town holding a 5-4 record when playing at the Koessler Athletic Center since 2001.
