Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Canisius College volleyball team, which had been mired in a three-game losing skid, snapped the streak with a resounding 3-0 win over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon. The Griffs improve to 6-14 and 4-4 in conference play, while Saint Peter's drops to 3-15 and 1-7 in MAAC play.
“It was a great team effort, as we were without our senior-setter Grace,” head coach Cathy Hummel said. “Julia did a great job as did the whole team. It was our best serving effort to date.”
The Griffs swept all three frames, winning 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19, en route to its fourth conference win of the season.
As a team the Griffs posted its second-highest hitting percentage of the season, registering .266, with 45 kills and just 16 errors on 109 attacks. Saint Peter's was unable to match that mark, tallying a .192 mark for the match.
Senior Rachel Kline led the Griffs attack, recording a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs and a .333 hitting percentage. Katlyn Tyler paced the team in kills with 16, while Hrycyk, filling in for the inured Streicher, posted 38 assists, for her new career-high.
Freshman Donnett Hickson got the nod as starting libero today and recorded 16 digs.
After opening up with a convincing 25-17, first-set victory, The Peacocks gave Canisius its biggest battle of the match in the second frame.
Saint Peter's opened the stanza with on a 14-9 run, to take the early lead. The Peacocks extended the lead as the squads split the next 10 points to make it 19-14. Canisius began its comeback a point later, going on a 9-3 run to tie the match 22-22 The Griffs went on to score three of the next four points to close out the set 25-23.
That momentum rolled into the next set as the squad handled the Peacocks 25-19, and won the match 3-0.
Canisius will have an opportunity for a statement win tomorrow afternoon as the squad takes on the league's top team, the Rider Broncs in Lawrenceville, N.J. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
